EVM-VVPAT case: SC asks Opposition to respond to EC by April 8
New Delhi, Apr 01 (HS): The Supreme Court has allowed 21 Opposition parties time till April 8 to respond to an Election Commission of India (ECI) affidavit saying an increased 50 per cent random physical verification of VVPATs will delay Lok Sabha poll results of 2019 by six whole days. A Bench led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, in a short hearing, agreed to a request made by senior advocate A.M. Singhvi for time to put the Opposition''s response to ECI in writing before the Supreme Court. The Commission had said that it would take 6-9 days to declare results from 50 per cent matching. In fact, in the previous hearing, the Supreme Court issued notice to the Election Commission and the Central Government seeking the response. Opposition leader Chandrababu Naidu, Akhilesh Yadav, KC Venugopal, Sharad Pawar, Arvind Kejriwal, Satish Chandra Mishra and 21 others of the opposition had filed a petition. In this plea, they had sought a random count of VVPAT slips of at least 50 per cent EVMs in each Assembly constituency before the declaration of Lok Sabha election results.
