Kolkata, Mar.30 (HS):Tightening their noose before the elections, officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence(DRI) have recovered and seized huge quantities of unaccounted gold biscuits, gold bars and even gold jewelleries weighing more than 25 kg and valued at over Rs 12 crores, and hard cash of more than Rs15.5 crores from different areas of the state including in this ''City of Joy'' during the past few days,raising questions about the circulation of black money in the state. Informing this, top DRI sources, who did not want to be identified, informed Hindusthan Samachar today that one person was arrested on charge of carrying unaccounted cash, amounting to Rs 40 lakhs, in two bags near the Jadu Babur Bazar area under Bhowanipur Police station. Following interrogation, he said the money was about to be handed over to a person for election purposes. He, however, could not inform about the origin of the cash but said the bags were handed over to him this morning for merely delivering the same to a known person,who was yet to be apprehended. Likewise only yesterday, acting on a tip off the DRI officials and the police conducted simultaneous raids in three hotels in Salt Lake, Burrabazar and Sadar Satret area in Central Kolkata and recovered gold biscuits and gold bars weighing about 16.34 kg and valued at over Rs 5.8 crores in international market. As many as six people were arrested from these hotels in this connection, the sources said. In a similar incident earlier this week, gold ornaments weighing nearly five kg, and valued at more than Rs.2 crores, were recovered and seized from two people in another hotel in Central Kolkata. Both the people, identifed as Mahesh Rai and Rita Maishek - who came from Mizoram- were arrested. Following similar tip off the investigating officials, to everbody''s surprise, unearthed a total of 662 lockers at the basement of a shopping Mall in South Kolkata and recovered unaccounted cash of about Rs 10 crores and nearly 12 kg of gold bars and ornaments from them. More interestingly nobody had so far claimed the ownership of any of these lockers and the valuables inside, the sources informed. In similar raids during the week huge cash worth Rs 87 lakhs were also recovered from two people at a railway station on the outskirt of the city. Though both were arrested none of them could provide any information about the origin of such cash, the sources said and made it clear that similar raids would be conducted unabated till the elections were over to trace the existence of huge amount of unaccounted money and gold, worth several hundred crores of rupees in and around the city.
