Japan to announce new era name on April 1
Tokyo ,Mar 30 (HS): Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, Yoshihide Suga will announce schedule for new era on April 1, the government sources have confirmed this today. The announcement is expected to be followed by comments from the prime minister. In principle, the government will follow the same procedures at the time when the era name changed to Heisei in January 1989, when then Chief Cabinet Secretary Keizo Obuchi made the announcement. In a similar manner, Suga is expected to hold and show the new era name written in sumi ink by a government official who is skilled in calligraphy. After that, Suga will unveil the "gengo", or new era name, and explain how the government reached the decision. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will then make a separate statement on the decision at noon, according to Suga. "The prime minister will convey the meaning of the new gengo and his message directly to the public," Suga said. The announcement will be made exactly a month before the new era begins on May 1, when Crown Prince Naruhito is expected to accede to the throne after his father Emperor Akihito formally abdicates on April 30. Suga told reporters, the government will not disclose the names of the scholars the government has commissioned to propose era name candidates even after the new name is announced.
