Mamata claims to provide 42 per cent representation of women in candidates list
\RKolkata, 12 March (HS): Like last time (in 2014) this time too Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has surprisingly announced the names of a number of young Bengali cine artistes in her list of 42 party candidates for as many Lok Sabha seats from West Bengal, raising several questions within the state''s political circles about their ability to learn the tricks of politics and clinch their respective seats in the coming poll. \R \RAnnouncing the full list of 42 Lok Sabha candidates of TMC at her residence today, the ruling party Chief as well as the Chief minister said unlike any other state she had ensured that there was as high as 42 per cent representation of women in her list of candidates, against the general norm of around 30 per cent elsewhere in India. \R \RMoreover,she said among them were five new faces who had absolutely no experience in politics so far. But since all of them were educated and intelligent she had full faith on their abilities to learn the nuances of Indian politics very soon, she said and expressed her ''full confidence'' in the winability of each of her party candidate, including the women, in the midst of a tough fight in some cases.\R \RDescribing her decision to put up ''up and coming'' actress Mimi Chakraborty from Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency in Southern fringe of the city as the biggest gamble of the party to win votes from a mostly urban and educated electorate, the political observers here said she had also took a big risk by fielding Moon Moon Sen,another veteran actress of yester years from Asansol where BJP''s heavyweight candidate and sitting MP Babul Supriyo would most likely be her opponent in a straight fight. \R \RThough another first timer and popular actress Nusrat Jahan has been picked up to fight from Basirhat constituency, in place of sitting MP Idris Ali, time would only tell whether she would be able to do justice to the Chief minister''s faith on her by winning the seat for TMC once again.\R \RSimilarly, questions were also raised about the prospect of victory for Kolkata Municipal Corporation Chairperson and long time Councillor Mala Roy who after shuttling between the Congress and TMC for a few years, for the first time got the opportunity to fight for a Lok Sabha seat from Kolkata South constituency replacing Sugata Basu - Harvard educated professor and a close relative Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. \R \RBut for Mausam Benazir Noor,a sitting Congress MP from Malda North, it was yet another opportunity for her to serve the people in the same constituency even after crossing over to TMC earlier this year, when Banerjee announced her name for the same seat, raising several queries about her political far sightedness. \R \RNow, it remains to be seen how more than 6.5 crore electorate in West Bengal would respond to the Chief minister''s step and whether they would hand over all the 42 Lok Sabha seats to her this time.\R \RHindusthan Samachar/Ankur/Pramod\R
