Disqualified Lalu to allot RJD symbols from jail
By Law Kumar Mishra Patna, Mar 12 (HS): RJD president, Lalu Prasad, who stands disqualified to contest any public election and is not even on the electoral rolls, will be the authority to distribute RJD symbols to the party candidates in the Lok Sabha elections. Lalu, first convicted in fodder scam in October 2013 for five years by a special CBI court was unseated from Lok Sabha following his sentence and under the amended People''s Representation Act, was declared disqualified to contest any election. Later, he was sentenced in three other fodder scam cases in 2017 and 2018 and according to the judgements, the total sentence is for 3.5 years and seven years each. He faces 22 years sentence under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption act and Indian Penal Code. Two more cases of fodder scam in which Lalu is named accused are pending judgement. The RJD at its meeting here had authorities Lalu to decide the names of the candidates and also distribute party symbol authority slips. Suggestion of some party leaders to authorise RJD vice-president, Rabri Devi or leader of opposition, Tejeshwai Prasad Yadav, was rejected and Lalu got the full authority. Lalu is not only authorised to distribute symbols to his party nominees, but authorised to negotiate with other partners of the Grand Alliance on seat sharing and naming their candidates too. In 2009, Lalu was defeated from Patliputra constituency by JDU candidate, Ranjan Prasad Yadav and elected from Saran defeating the former union minister, Rajiv Pratap Rudy of BJP. He could not contest the 2015 assembly elections or 2014 Lok Sabha elections following his conviction. An ordinance prepared by the UP government to facilitate the convicted leaders to contest elections was torn down by the then Congress vice-president, Rahul Gandhi. This led to end of electoral politics of Lalu. But, Lalu had no regrets as he decided to seek an alliance with the Congress for the coming Lok Sabha elections. When Lalu and Ram Vilas Paswan faced defeats in the 2009 elections and subsequent 2010 assembly elections in Bihar, Lalu had admitted breaking away from the Congress was a blunder that resulted in RJD''s heavy loss. Paswan was defeated in 2009 by Ram Sundar Das of JDU. Now, all the top leaders of the RJD, Congress, RLSP, HAM(S), Vikash sheel Insaan Party, are seeking audience with Lalu in the prison ward of the Ranchi based hospital. Former JDU president, Sharad Yadav, former chief minister, Jeetan Ram Manjhi, former chief ministers of Jharkhand, Babu Lal Marandi and Hemant Soren are among those who met Lalu in jail ward for seat sharing arrangements. Congress president, Rahul Gandhi had met him during his detention in New Delhi hospital too. In the previous elections, Lalu had campaigned actively even in 2015 assembly elections. He was on bail. But, this time, the former chief minister of Bihar who is revered by the Yadavas who constitute 12.5 per cent of the total electorate will miss him in the elections. Common voters will miss his unconventional campaigning in the vernacular languages in Lok Sabha elections, first time since Lalu entered electoral politics in 1977 winning Saran Lok Sabha seat. He used to be in great demand in other parts of the country too during elections, but now his confinement in judicial custody prevents him from "entertaining" the voters in the campaign.
