Heavy rain, strong winds may hit Kolkata, South Bengal, tonight
Kolkata, Mar.11 (HS): Normal Life in Kolkata and elsewhere in South Bengal may be disrupted once again from tonight as the possibility of yet another bout of heavy rain and strong wind looms large over this region for the second time in two weeks. According to the Met office here today, after a few days of sunshine and clear sky, a huge rain fed cloud has started heading towards South Bengal from the South-South West of Bay of Bengal which might have a landfall by tonight or tomorrow with a wind speed of over 52 km per hour. Though there is no apparent possibility of loss of life or damage to houses or other property, standing crops in fields might be affected because of heavy rain for several hours from Monday night till tomorrow, the Met office informed Hindusthan Samachar here this evening. We expect that about 25 to 30 mm of rain would be recorded during the next 48 hours, they said and claimed that it was the part of a Norwester which was a natural phenomenon during this time of the year when strong hot winds from the plains rushed towards the Bay of Bengal to meet the cold wind in mid sea, generating a major depression in the air. Apart from Kolkata and the neighbouring South and North 24 Parganas districts, large areas of Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, East and West Midnapore, Bankura, Bibhum and East and West Burdwan districts would be affected, the Met office said and urged fishermen in coastal districts not to venture into the sea during the next two days as the sea would remain rough.
