NDA & GA, two dominant alliances in Bihar, yet to finalise candidates
By Law Kumar Mishra Patna, Mar 10 (HS): The two dominant alliances in Bihar - Grand Alliance (GA) and the NDA are yet to announce the names of their candidates for the Lok Sabha elections though the Election Commission released the poll schedule on Sunday. The seat sharing agreement between the NDA partners of JDU, BJP and the LJP was reached two months back and their leaders had claimed the candidates names would be announced after Makar Sankranti. It did not take place. The struggle between the BJP and JDU continues even now as the BJP will have to give up five of its constituencies to the JDU under the seat sharing agreement. BJP had won 22 seats in 2014 elections, but now it will have to confine itself to 17 constituencies only as JDU also wants to contest on 17 seats and the remaining six will go to the LJP. Candidature of the union minister, Giriraj Singh, elected in 2014 from Nawada as BJP nominee is doubtful as the LJP has claimed its candidate would contest from this constituency. Bhola Singh elected as BJP candidate from Begusrai died last year. Uday Sinngh, who had contested the 2014 elections from Purnia as BJP candidate deserted the party and is expected to contest as Congress nominee. Kirti Azad elected from Darbhanga on BJP symbol too joined the Congress last month. Film star turned politician Shatrughna Sinha, who represented Patna Saheb as BJP MP, is determined to contest from the same constituencty though BJP is in no mood to accommodate him. He met the RJD leader, Lalu Prasad in jail and his wife Rabri Devi here last week seeking GA nomination. In the Grand Alliance, insistence of the Congress to fight from the front foot has put the RJD in trouble as the state Congress leaders want to contest from at least 17 constituencies against the offer of 12 from the RJD. RJD is facing problems from other partners, including the HAM(S) of former chief minister,Jeetan Ram Manjhi and the RLSP led by former union minister, Upendra Kushwaha as both are negotiating for more than offered to them. RJD had four MPs from the state in the Lok Sabha. Lalu Prasad is still the key figure in the GA as leaders are visiting him in jail at Ranchi to negotiate for the seats. The state RJD which met here on Sunday has authorised him to select nominees and sign on the authority letters for symbol allotment, rejecting the suggestion to allow Rabri Devi, who is vice-president of the party.
