Election Commission announces the dates for 2019 Lok Sabha Elections Poll announcement sets in motion a highly-anticipated political contest New Delhi, Mar 10 (HS): The Election Commission has announced that Lok Sabha polls 2019 will be held in seven phases from April 11. Addressing a press conference at Plaenary Hall, Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today to announce the poll schedule, EC said that the term of the present Lok Sabha ends on the 3rd of June. The model code of conduct will come into force with the poll schedule announcement. Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner said that assessment meetings were held with states and UTs through all of January. EC also held deliberations with several key departments, visited states and UTs. He further said that interactions were held with political parties followed by presentation by CEO of states. “Examination schedules of various state boards, CBSE, festivals, harvest season were kept in mind,” he added. Health of rolls was monitored constantly and updation will continue. 15 million new voters have been added this year, he said. Election Commission has made extensive preparations for 17th Lok Sabha polls. Elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure smooth conduct of free and fair election. Any violation of model code of conduct will be dealt with strictly. Special observers will be sent to sensitive states and locations, he added. In 2014, the Commission had announced the schedule on 5th of March to hold the nine-phase election. Out of 543 seats in the 16th Lok Sabha, BJP has 268 members at present followed by Congress which has 45 and AIADMK, which has 37. Trinamool Congress has 34 members whereas BJD has 18. Twenty-two seats are lying vacant as on 6th February this year. However, the poll announcement will set in motion a highly-anticipated political contest which is shaping up to be a “Modi versus Rest” showdown. As many as 89.88 crore electors, including 1.59 crore new voters aged 18-19 years, are registered to vote in 2019 general election, though this number is likely to go up since additions to the electoral rolls can be made till the last day of filing of nomination. In 2014 rolls published ahead of Lok Sabha poll that year, there were a total of 81.45 crore voters enrolled at the time of announcement but the final figure, including service voters, stood higher at 83.4 crore. As per final electoral rolls with reference to January 1, 2019, the last parts of which were published on February 22, there are 89.71 crore voters across the country comprising 46.5 crore men, 43.2 crore women and 33,109 belonging to the ‘third gender’. In addition, nearly 16.62 lakh have enrolled as service voters. As per EC sources, there shall be a total of 10,35,932 polling stations spread over 4.36 lakh locations across the country for this general election.
