Chanting slogans for ''Barama'', thousands of weeping followers of the Matua community, mostly women, accompanied the body during the brief journey to the specially constructed crematorium to bade her farewell and remained present till the entire process of her last rites was completed at around 4 p.m. Among those present (at the crematorium) were West Bengal Food and Civil Supply minister and senior Trinamool Congress leader Jyotipriya Malliak and local MP and Vinapani Devi''s Daughter in law Mamata Bala Thakur on one side and the Vice President of Matua Mahasangh and the Grand Son of Baroma Shantanu Thakur on the other. It may be recalled that that Shantanu Thakur demanded a CBI inquiry into the causes of death of 99 year old Vinapani Devi on 5 March night at the hospital. The death of Vinapani Devi on Tuesday night at the government owned SSKM Hospital after a protracted illness brought on to the fore a raging controversy within the family of the Matua Mahasangh chief, having an estimated nationwide followers of more than five crores, when one section of the family members demanded the holding of last rites of Vinapani Devi yesterday, the other section led by Shatanu Thakur, a local BJP leader, wanted it to take place not before today so that many more people from different parts of the state could come to Ashoknagar, about 50 km from Kolkata, and pay their last respect to Baroma. Prime minister Narendra Modi after learning about the news of the death of Vinapani Devi deeply condoled her passing away and recalled his recent meeting with her at the Matua Mahasangh headquarters at Ashoknagar. ''I went to meet her and took her blessings'', he said in a twitter message. Among others Chief minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her deepest condolence at the passing away of the well respected Matua Sangh chief. In a twitter message she said ''I am deeply pained at the passing away of Matua matriarch Baro Ma Binapani Thakur. My condolences to her family and my brothers and sisters of Matua Community at this moment of grief. It was a great opportunity for me to meet Baro Ma last November,on the centenary of her birthday''. Later in another tweet she announced that in view of her rich contribution to the Matua community for long Vinapani Devi would be accorded state-funeral with gun salute.
