Congress rejects pre-poll alliance with CPI(M) in Bengal
Kolklata, 6 March (HS);The possibility of a pre-poll alliance between the Congress and the CPI (M) received a major jolt today after West Bengal Pradesh Congress (WBPCCI) President Somen Mitra rejected any such proposal and left the issue to Congress President Rahul Gandhi to decide. According to WBPCCI President Somen Mitra, who left for New Delhi this afternoon along with senior Congress leader Abdul Mannan and the party''s Central Observer Gaurav Gogoi to hold a meeting with Rahul Gandhi on the issue, said, majority of state party leaders and workers had expressed their strong reservations against a pre-poll alliance with the CPI(M) which had ruled the state for 34 long years till 2011 and had allegedly killed many Congress workers during their long regime. There is also a strong opposition among the party workers about the demand of CPI(M) to contest from the Murshidabad and Raigunj Lok Sabha seats, which they had won in 2014. ''We have our strong candidates for both the seats'', Mitra said and made it clear that the Congress would not succumb under any pressure from the CPI(M) for either of the seats and left the issue to decide by the Congress President Rahul Gandhi and the party High Command. It may be recalled that the CPI(M) has evinced keen interest in fighting altogether 20 of the state''s 42 Lok Sabha seats this time including those of Murshidabad and Raigunj (in North Dinajpur district). Now, it remains to be seen whether Rahul Gandhi would decide in favour of a pre poll alliance with CPI(M) and agreed to the party''s demand for contesting once again from both Murshidabad and Raigunj seats like last time.
