Mukul Roy gets eight weeks respite from arrest in MLA's murder case
Kolkata, 5 March (HS):In yet another reprieve,Calcutta High Court today issued a stay order for the second time on the arrest of senior BJP leader Mukul Roy for eight weeks in connection with the murder of Trinamool Congress MLA Satyajit Biswas near his house in Nadia district on 9 February. Two member Division bench of Justice Jaoymalya Bagchi and Justice Monojit Mondal heard the appeal of both Roy. After hearing submission made by the state government for more than an hour today the court issued a stay order in favor of the BJP leader ensuring that he could no longer be arrested by the West Bengal police during the next eight weeks in connection with the MLA''s murder pending further investigation. The next hearing of the case would be taken up by the same bench after seven weeks, the judges observed. However, the court also made it clear that in spite of the coming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP leader would not be allowed to enter Nadia district till the next hearing and asked the police to continue its investigation as per law. It may be recalled that Roy who filed a petition seeking anticipatory bail in the case on 12 February, has repeatedly stated that he was not involved in the said murder on 9 February as he was out of the state on that eventful night. But he agreed that he personally knew the deceased legislator and expressed his deep condolence at his murder on the night of Saraswati Puja near his house. Trinamool Congress MLA from Krishnagang Assembly constituency in Nadia district,Satyajit Biswas (42) was shot dead from point blank range with a country made revolver by an unidentified assailant during a cultural function near his house on 9 February night in presence of many local people.Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced ''brought dead'' by the doctors there bringing a pall of gloom in the entire constituency. As an immediate action the state government suspended both the Hanskhali Police station Officer In Charge and the MLA''s bodyguard on charge of negligence of duty. Later senior TMC leaders including Youth Trinamool Congress President Avishek Banerjee MP and Education minister Partha Chatterejee blamed Mukul Roy for the murder and said he was allegedly involved in the crime, which was however vehemently denied by BJP as well as Roy himself. Now it remains to be seen how Roy was able to clear his name from the case which has shocked the entire state before the coming Lok Sabha elections. Hindusthan Samachar/Ankur/Pramod \
