New Chinese made Metro Rail coaches arrives in Kolkata
Kolkata, 4 March (HS): Ending a long wait for more than a year, the new Chinese built coaches of Kolkata Metro Railway arrived here today for their induction into the 22.5 km long underground Railway service in this ''City of Joy'' at the earliest. Informing this Kolkata Metro Railway Chief Public Relations Manager Indrani Banerjee told Hindusthan Samachar here this evening that altogether nine brand new coaches from the Dalian Railway Factory in Southern China reached the Kolkata Port via Singapore and Chittagong in Bangladesh after travelling more than 10,000 nautical miles through the South China sea and Bay of Bengal. These coaches would now be taken to the Noapara Railway workshop in North Kolkata for assembly and the mandatory month long trial runs within the network, she said. Asked about the new features of these Chinese made coaches Banerjee said apart from their slightly bigger size, each of these state of the art fully air conditioned coaches was fitted with close circuit television cameras, and the most modern ''talk back'' system for direct communication with the drivers and the guard in case of emergency. Moreover, unlike the previous coaches,built with indigenous technology at the Railways Chennai plant, these coaches were fitted with energy saving device at the wheels which would also store energy at the time of using brakes, she said and added several new equipment to prevent fire in any of the coaches were also fitted. Among them Third Rail Current Collector (TRCC) was also introduced for the first time in these coaches to improve the performance of the city''s underground railways.
