Mukul Roy seeks to defer elections in West-Bengal because of deteriorating law and order
Kolkata, 4 March (HS):Senior BJP leader Mukul Roy today expressed serious concern at the unabated violence against party workers in West Bengal and sought immediate intervention of the Election Commission in view of yesterday''s unprovoked attacks on BJP bike rallies in several areas in which several party workers were injured. According to top BJP sources, armed with several such complaints of violence at the instance of ruling party TMC, Roy went to the state Election Commission office here and demanded that elections should not held unless law and order situation was not improved in West Bengal. ''Bengal should be kept out of the purview of the coming Lok Sabha elections until total normalisation of the present situation'', Roy told the Chief Electoral Officer(CEO) and said the EC should withheld its decision to hold Parliamentary elections in West Bengal along with the rest of the country. Describing yesterday''s alleged deliberate attacks on BJP bike rallies in Kolkata and else where in the state by the ruling party workers as well as the police in which several BJP workers were severely assaulted, Roy demanded that proper steps must be taken by the authorities to book all culprits. Referring to the alleged high handedness and strong arm tactics of the City police in preventing the Bike rallies from taking out in different areas of Kolkata in accordance with the party''s scheduled programme, Roy demanded that the EC must ensure that in accordance with its recent circular all senior police officials who had spent at least three years in a row in one post, must be replaced before the coming elections. Though the Mamata Banerjee government had been issuing transfer orders, all of them were being brought back to similar posts through back doors to serve her own purpose,Roy alleged and demanded stern action against such measures. In this connection he also cited the example of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajive Kumar who had been transferred as the ADG of the Criminal Investigation Department(CID) to perform similar duties as that of a CP, he alleged. Meanwhile the city police in a statement here today claimed that the Bike rallies were obstructed in view of the ongoing Higher Secondary examinations in the state and to maintain peace and harmony.
