Spice Jet adds Durgapur as its new destination under 'UDAN'
Durgapur/Kolkata, 4 March (HS) : SpiceJet, the country’s leading carrier, today introduced four daily direct flights between the steel city of Durgapur and Mumbai and also Chennai, under the Union government''s ''UDAN'' scheme. Accordingly, Durgapur has now become SpiceJet’s 12th destination under the regional connectivity scheme and 53rd in its domestic network. The Durgapur-Mumbai-Durgapur and Durgapur-Chennai-Durgapur sectors, awarded to SpiceJet under UDAN III, are exclusive to the airline, thereby making it the only carrier to offer Boeing 737 flight services on these sectors. Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public enterprise Babul Supriyo and Debashis Saha, Associate Vice President – Regulatory and Government Affairs, SpiceJet were present among others at a programme to announce the new Spicejet flights from Durgapur. At the same time, Shilpa Bhatia, Chief Sales and Revenue Officer - SpiceJet, said, since Durgapur was considered to be the most industrialized city in eastern India, the new flights would go a long way towards further accelerating its industrial prospect,while providing business travelers with enhanced options and convenience. ''The new flights will save flyers from Durgapur the time-consuming journey to Kolkata airport'', she said adding that SpiceJet’s unyielding commitment to UDAN will transform the country’s aviation eco-system,helping realize the Prime Minister''s vision of making every Indian fly. ''With the recent addition of the new flights from Durgapur, Gwalior, Bhopal and Jharsuguda, Spice-Jet would be operating 43 daily flights under the regional connectivity scheme. Durgapur’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport,at Andal, is India''s first private-sector Greenfield airport. It serves both the industrial cities of Durgapur and Asansol. The new flights will further strengthen Spice-Jet’s network in the state of West Bengal. The airline currently operates from Kolkata and Bagdogra Airports. At present, SpiceJet operates 23 flights under UDAN on the routes of Delhi-Kishangarh-Delhi, Kolkata-Pakyong-Kolkata, Guwahati-Pakyong-Guwahati, Mumbai-Porbandar, Mumbai-Kandla-Mumbai, Hyderabad-Puducherry-Hyderabad, Jaipur-Jaisalmer-Jaipur, Delhi-Adampur-Delhi, Ahmedabad-Jaisalmer-Ahmedabad, Surat-Jaisalmer-Surat and Delhi-Kanpur-Delhi'', company sources said here today.
