New Delhi, September 24 (HS) : Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had a poor start to IPL 2020, and they have suffered a 49-run defeat against defending champion Mumbai Indians in their very first match. Both KKR bowlers and batsmen flopped badly.

The match was a nightmare for the most expensive foreign player in IPL history, Pat Cummins. Cummins bowled just three overs, conceding 49 runs. The market is hot for criticism about Cummins, after which KKR captain Dinesh Karthik has now come to his rescue.

Karthik endorsed Pat Cummins, saying that he is a "world champion" and he will return. Karthik also revealed that Cummins was allowed to play only a few hours before the match started and said it would be "unfair" to judge a player after the first game's performance.

Karthik said at the press conference after the match, "It is very unfair to judge him right now, he was in quarantine and he was allowed to play the match at 3:34 pm. We are happy to have him and I don't think this is the game where we need to judge him. He is a world champion bowler. I am confident and I am sure he will come back well.”

Batting first in the match against KKR, Mumbai scored a big total of 195 runs, thanks to Rohit Sharma's 80 runs. In response, KKR batsmen could not do anything special and they lost the match by 49 runs.
