Corona has also cast shadow on Panchayat elections in UP...

Lucknow, September 09 (HS): Corona which has affected life and liberty has also cast its shadow on Panchayat   elections in Uttar Pradesh . The polls scheduled to be held before the last week of December are unlikely to be held on time.

Knowledgeable sources said here on Wednesday that  there would be minimum four  months delay . The reason given was delay in revision of electoral roll.It is hoped that  the exercise will begin  next month  or in early November.

The revision is required because  new men and women  have become eligible to vote now. Some others might have died.

The state has about 59,000 Panchayats. The BJP which had done exceeding well in Assembly elections held two years after Panchayat polls will do its best to repeat the performance in all elections.

The Panchayati Raj system has three tiers, Gram Panchayat, Mandal Panchayat and Zila Panchayat. Elections will be held for all of them --not in one go.

The Constitutional amendment in 1992 made this rural system of governance strong and healthy.
