Kolkata, September 9 (HS) : The one day brief Monsoon session of the West Bengal Assembly was adjourned sine die Wednesday after paying homage to several leaders who passed away in recent months.

Though it was previously decided to hold the session for at least two days to pass a number of important bills following brief discussions, as demanded by the opposition, Speaker Biman Banerjee announced his decision to hold it only for one day to pay homage to the leaders who lost their lives during the intervening period of two sessions.

Accordingly, as soon as the house assembled for the day in the presence of most of the 294 MLAs, tge Speaker read out the names of several prominent people including former President Pranab Mukherjee and several others  who died since the last session of the Assmebly in March through their obituary references. A two minute silence was also observed in the memory of the departed leaders before the House was adjourned.

Before formally winding up the session, the Speaker briefly referred to a number of  Bills which were passed through voice vote. He also explained to the members under what circumstances he had decided to cut short the session and regretted that no discussions on the present Covid and other situations could be taken up.

Earlier it was also decided that not only all the 294 MLAs and the security personnel, but all others including the news reporters covering the session would have to undergo a Rapid Antigen Covid-19 test before the session. Only those who tested negative would be allowed to enter the House. But as six members of the House tested positive in the test yesterday, the  Speaker immediately decided to cut shot the session to only one day as a preventive measure

As such only about 250 of the total total 294 MLAs including Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, all her cabinet colleagues and most of the Opposition members attended the house today.

With the state Assembly elections less than a year away, this was perhaps the last session of the West Bengal Assembly, sources said.
