CM's conscience keeper being interrogated by NIA..

Kochi, July 27, (HS) Political Kerala is all tensed up as the National Investigation Agency officers began interrogating M Sivsankar, the conscience keeper as well as the former Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday morning in connection with the gold smuggling case.

The Kochi office of the NIA told Hindusthan Samachar that they do not have any information to share with the media. “Please wait for announcements to be made from the Delhi office,” said one of the officers based in Kochi.

This is the second time Sivsankar is being interrogated by the premier investigation agency. He was grilled for over five hours at Thiruvananthapuram last week and was let off with the notice that he may be summoned to the Kochi office at any time.

The NIA officials are focussing more on the contradictions in the statements given by Sivsankar to the Customs and the NIA. They will also seek clarifications from him about the differences in the statements given by Swapna, Sarith and Sandeep to the two teams of Customs and the NIA. According to Sivsankar, he has close liaison with Swapna whom he climed to know for more than ten years. But he had told that he was ignorant about the smuggling operations undertaken by her or her associates.

If Sivsankar is arrested on Monday, it would bring a lot of embarrassment to Chief Minister Vijayan. There are strong reports that the CPI(M) leadership had made some kind of patch up with Sivsankar and his family in return for the IAS officer’s silence on the role of Pinarayi Vijayan in the whole episode.

“The party leadership is in touch with the Koviluvila House, the ancestral family of Sivsankar. His father late Madhavan Nair was a CPI(M) associate and hence he would stand by what the party demands,” said a close relation of the family.

The LDF liaison committee scheduled to meet on Tuesday has been postponed indefinitely because the CPI(M) does not like to meet the alliance partners when the Chief Minister’s principal secretary has been arrested.
