New York, Aug 22 (HS) Four-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one tennis player, Belgium's Kim Clijsters has withdrawn from the Western and Southern Open tennis tournament because of an abdominal injury.

The WTA website quoted Kim as saying, "I thank you for the chance to play in the Western and Southern Open tournament. I have wonderful memories of playing in the Cincinnati Open and I was ready to be a part of it this year. It is disappointing to be out of this, but after discussing with the medical team and my team, I need some more time to return."

Kim received a wild card for this tournament. The 37-year-old was to face Jennifer Brady in the first round. She said, "I am grateful to be in this bubble and to prepare with my team at UATA Billy Jean King. I thank the Western and Southern Open teams, the USTA and the WTA for their efforts. They really worked hard to create a safe environment." Earlier, Spain's Garbine Muguruza also withdrew from the tournament due to an ankle injury.
