New Delhi, Aug 01 (HS) The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his 100th Punya Tithi.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, "India bows to Lokmanya Tilak on his 100th Punya Tithi. His intellect, courage, sense of justice and idea of Swaraj continue to inspire."

It is worth mentioning that Bal Gangadhar Tilak, born as Keshav Gangadhar Tilak, was an Indian nationalist, teacher and an independence activist.

Tilak was the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement. The British colonial authorities called him "The father of the Indian unrest."

Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the foremost leader of India’s freedom struggle before the advent of the Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi era, breathed his last, after a brief illness, in Bombay in the early hours of August 1, 1920. He was 64.
